Private Garden Notting Hill

PRIVATE GARDEN, NOTTING HILL

A contemporary town garden in west London required detailed collaboration between us, Theis + Khan Architects and contractor to develop a design above a basement extension and within a relatively small space with a backdrop of very tall mature trees.

The site was empty and derelict. The design concept was to create a juxtaposition of a bright sunny open paved terrace and a heavily planted ‘wooded’ space with multi-stem trees and hedges to make the garden feel much larger, and to hide a bike and garden store. The view from the kitchen was also critical and the garden acts as a visual tableau throughout the changing seasons.

A raised dining terrace involved a bespoke design of a series of parapet planters with an integral safety balustrade which created low level privacy without blocking views or light.

The front garden takes its lead from the Victorian terrace vernacular using bespoke cut natural stone paving and edgings. It includes a single parking space with EV hook-up, new trees and understorey shade planting to work with the north-facing aspect.
